Various treatments are available, which include the following:

Mobilisation/Manipulation

Physiotherapists often use the word mobilisation rather than manipulation. Mobilisation involves a frequently repeated gentle and graded movement of joints aimed at increasing mobility. If it is causing any discomfort, the patient can stop it at any time.

Exercise

Exercise forms part of nearly every treatment in order to recover normal use of the affected part. Exercises may be used to regain lost movement in a joint, improve breathing or strengthen weak muscles and improve circulation. The physiotherapist will also be concerned with the maintenance of good posture and the provision of a home programme.

Massage

Massage is the movement of the body's soft tissues such as skin and muscle. It is used to relieve pain and tension, increase circulation and dispense swelling. It can be used to loosen muscles, tendons or ligaments, which have been stuck together after injury.

Advice

This is an important part of every treatment with the object of preventing a recurrence of a condition. How to avoid strain on different parts of the body during work and sporting activities forms a valuable part of the advice given. This is particularly pertinent to neck and low back pain and running injuries.

Equipment

Patients can be advised / assessed for a variety of equipment at the clinic i.e. special pillows, lumbar rolls, lumbar supports/belts, neck collars, wrist rest splints, seating wedges, walking aids, exercise equipment, literature and videos on exercise and back care.

Report Writing

Patients will often seek a physiotherapy report to support a claim for compensation following a car accident or an accident at work. This is usually organised via your solicitor and/or insurance company.
